TPiRetro: 2 October 2000 (Season 29 Premiere)

Just to keep my skills sharp, here's a little TPiRetro summertime fun for all: A look back at the Season 29 premiere, which I just found going through some old VHS tapes of mine. I thought I'd share it with you today.

Enjoy...

We wanted to kick off the 29th year in an exciting way, says Bob -- so they created a new game just for the occasion. It's the debut of Triple Play!:

"Kinda fun, isn't it?" says Bob as he tosses to commercial.

So yeah, Triple Play being insanely tough is hardly a recent phenomenon. (And much like Pay the Rent a decade later, people would be accusing Triple Play of being developed with the intent of being a budget-saving Big Ticket game that was designed to be won very rarely, if ever. So that didn't start during the Mike Richards regime either...)

I wonder if you can still do it that way... has anyone tried?

One thing you notice about these old anniversary shows, even during the height of Bob Barker's self-congratulatory era (we weren't quite there yet in Season 29, but it was already starting), is that the show really didn't make a huge production deal out of the fact. Oh, there were balloons and cake-cutting ceremonies to be sure, and maybe a new Pricing Game debut or a Big Ticket game played, something along those lines, but aside from that the anniversary show was really just a standard episode in terms of prize budget (for the time, that is), and no real extracurricular activities either. It's not necessarily better or worse than what Price has been doing lately in the Carey Administration, but it's worth noting the differences between the old production aegis and the current one...

OUCH!

The problem with a truly random game immune to any sort of finessing by the producers, which is what Dice Game is, is that some truly painful losses can and often do occur.

A good shot of the Illustrious One himself at the podium, resplendent in a red tux with silver lapels and polka dots. You could never describe Rod's wardrobe, you could only experience it to get the full effect of the sartorial splendor on display...
