1956 Chevrolet 210 restoration (350cu in, V8; $32,000)

I'd have to triple-check my notes, but I believe this is the most expensive car Spelling Bee has ever been played for. And it's a restoration at that...

Flashback: We're not going too far back this time... only as far as 27 November 2007, to be precise. The show bills this as Drew's first appearance on the show, on the premiere of Season 36, and indeed it was supposed to be... but this episode aired out of sequence on the date I provided. Drew's first aired episode came about five weeks earlier, on 15 October -- and was a perfect show. (Remember when we used to have those?) The clip shown here is of the episode that was taped, and was originally intended to air, as Drew's debut before Fremantle decided to switch things up.

And on another note, it's only been four years, but already Season 36 looks like ancient history; Drew was huge back then, and the set, which at the time I thought was a nice modern update of Bente Christensen's classic design, looks decidedly dated compared to what we see today. It's amazing what can happen in such a short span of time...

TPiRecap Exclusive Flashback: How about a playing of the original Balance Game from circa 1983, Barker Dollars and all? Often considered by fans to be one of the most needlessly complicated Pricing Games of all time, but speaking just for myself I never had any problem understanding the concept. Of course, I've always been a bit savant-like in my ability to "get" stuff like this, so I'm hardly typical of the average game show viewer in the early '80s... watch the clip, then decide for yourself if Balance Game V1 deserved a better fate.

I swear, at first I thought George called for "Darth Newbie" and was preparing a series of gags about the Sith opening their apprenticeship program... but no such luck. Ah well.

Sure enough, with the car audio comes a chance to win the matching car in Lucky $even:
2011 Mazda2 Sport (60:40 folding rear seat, 1.5L, AT, cargo net, paint/fabric prot)

Lucky $even is another game out looking for a little redemption in Season 40. Last year it was only won seven times out of 35 playings. Let's see if a fresh start can bring a turnaround.

Unlike It's In the Bag, redemption for Lucky $even will have to come another day. My way of thinking would've been to say 8 for the last digit, since I kinda figured it wasn't gonna be a Dice Game price.

Flashback: For the third time this week, let's travel back to Day One, 4 September 1972 (you can find the YouTube links in previous recaps), and see Connie win Any Number for the first-ever car the show awarded:

WIN!
(Range: $385; Piggy Bank: $1.09)

Notable in this clip: The stage player actually stod behind a T-shaped podium on the first episode (and only the first episode; it was scrapped immediately afterward), and Any Number, like most Season 1 games, didn't have its name on its prop originally. And the Piggy Bank... wow. Yes, it's just a gag prize, but you'd never see one worth that little today! Also, this is one of those games where I really do miss the Eggcrate-style numbers; I never did think Vane particularly suited it. But, eh, personal preference and all that.

Side note: At this point I took an hour off to watch the finale of All My Children, just to be part of something historic. And all I have to say is... Really? A Sopranos ending? Really? If I were a soap fan (which I'm not), I'd be pissed about a series with over four decades of legacy ending on a cliffhanger with no chance of eventual resolution.

As I feared, the ecstasy of a four-car Race Game win on Monday caused some pretty poor prize budgets for the rest of the week. I suspect we'll be paying the price of that one for a while to come. On the positive side, the setups weren't too evil this week... one almost wonders if the show realized they were getting too cruel and decided to start playing more fair now.

Well, that's one down and about 38 more to go... and already I feel like I need a vacation. Stay tuned to this blog for full weekly stats, coming just as soon as I compile them.

  2. Ah, see, I didn't know that. That does put a different spin on it. Though it was still a cheap way to end a series that's been around as long as that one has, even if it's not totally going away.

  3. The show decided to have a good premiere week by their standards. We'll see if things plummet to the tune of 8-22 (as opposed to 14-16) as we go back to earlier tapedates.

  4. Oh hai Lucky $even, my least favorite TPiR car game ever...

And I liked the Showcases this time; the Apple-heavy one is my dream Showcase! And I will make sure I make a note of that one when I finally attend a The Price is Right taping. I'd love to go and do that as soon as possible.
