TPiRecap: 17 May 2013

Episode # 6355K
Airdate 17 May 2013
VTR 15 April 2013
First Four Melissa, Adam, Ronalee, Sandra (R-L)
Today's Models Manuela Abreález, Amber Lancaster, Gwendolyn Osborne-Smith

Drew refers to her as Smith today. Now I don't know what to make of it, so I'll go the hyphenated route. (She'll still be abbreviated "GO," at least for today.)

I like how Drew even has his own little version of the old Barker Torture Reveal®©™℠ now, with the whole "Oh, I'm so sorry... you're gonna have to pay tax and title on a new car!" bit. Granted it's not as drawn-out as Bob used to do, but it works for Drew. Great win to start the day!

Flip Flop:
Trip to London, England (Indiana Jones map, 6n, 4-course gourmet dinner cruise on the Thames; AL)

Oh the Thames, they are a-changin'... ♫ Sorry, couldn't resist.

Yes, there's a Thames River in Connecticut, where Adam's from... nowhere near as fabled as its British namesake, of course, but it does flow through the city of New London, which is neat. Just thought I'd mention it, being a Connecticut kind of guy myself despite my Ohio exile. ;^)

I'm thinking $8,746 for this, so... Flip.

As odd as $3,294 seems for the motorcycle, $4,395 looks absolutely perfect for the refrigerator. So I'll go with that.

Hate to say "I told you so," but... A comparatively rare loss in this game (I think it's only the third time since it debuted at the tail end of Season 40).

That one I'm actually worried about. For once, there were two likely candidates for the most expensive thing on the table (the IcyHOT patch being the other, of course) and this one could go either way. Let's hope for the best.

Just in time for tomorrow's Preakness Stakes, we go to the Studio 33 version of Pimlico for Rat Race:
Win: 2013 Kia Rio LX (1.6L, AT, carpeted mats, rear bumper appliqué; $15,690 [1]; AL)
Place: 23" all-in-one computer (2MP webcam, 8GB RAM, 1TB HD, AIO; impossible to price due to lack of evidence for brand name; GO)
Show: Bettinardi 8pc his & hers golf package (impossible to price due to being a random assortment; GO)

Just when things were going so well, along comes this mess to screw up my day. Why they can't just have George say "It's a Rat Race prize package worth whatever-amount-of-dollars!" the way he does for Safe Crackers and 2 for the Price of 1, I have no idea. Master Key, same deal. Come on, Richards, can't you throw us statisticians the occasional bone?

(So there's no misunderstanding: I love Rat Race! Truly. It's just the lack of announced ARPs for the prizes that has me up the freakin' sequoia. At least the cars are relatively easy to determine thanks to the miracle of the Intartubez.)

WIPEOUT

Okay, I have never seen that happen before in the relatively short history of this game -- a rat that totally failed to get out of the starting gate. I've seen a rat stop in mid-race before, but never this. Drew coaxes it into doing its thing after the fact.

Unfortunately, this cannot be considered a technical anything, and here's why. In the rules spiel for the game, Drew actually accounts for the possibility something like this could happen, when he says "There's no guarantee they'll even finish the race" or words to that effect. A rat putting up a DNF, even if due to mechanical failure, is an explicit part of the game -- and the chance you take when you pick a rat. Nothing in the rulebook says a rat has to run, which is bad news for Leroy... and since Drew actually created Rat Race, he should know the rules better than almost anyone. So, there's no chance for appeal to the producers on this one, alas.
