No need for death yet, though, when you're both in the same boat. ^^;;

One Wrong Price:
  1. Pair of Sony Vaio 13.3" laptops (BD-ROM, 750GB HD, 2GB RAM each; MA)
  2. Inspire M3 multistation home gym (unmodeled!)
  3. Mizarak Chandler II pool table w/accessories (AL)

Pool table

Judging by this, my gut instinct is to say the pool table "feels" the most wrong here. Easy enough to believe a single Vaio with those specs is $1,460, and I know from past experience that M3 is indeed $3,495. On top of that, the pool table is not a Golden West Billards model, which usually means it's about half the price you see posted here, if that much.

HOW DID I KNOW THAT WOULD HAPPEN?
(AL handles the reveal for the home gym, BTW)

This cinches it, as far as I'm concerned. The show does still use identifiable patterns -- they're just not the same patterns we saw during the last ten or so years of the Dobkowitz Regime, and in fact may require actually paying attention to prices instead of stimulus-response situations. Unfortunately, today's viewers may just be too casual, or have too much going on in their own lives, to exploit them to the same level we saw during the '90s and early- to mid-'00s. There's nothing wrong with that, of course... but it does mean things that are "obvious" to us, the home viewers (especially those of us who, like me, tend to pay a bit closer attention to this show than most people in full possession of their sanities would), aren't necessarily obvious to those lucky thirty per week who get to be stage players.

We live in changing times, my friends. As if you didn't know that already.

Speaking of patterns, there's one that got sidestepped. The three-digt prize has been ending in 0, 5, or 9 more often than not lately.

Never too late to start a rally, though. Well, actually, sometimes it is too late, but that's when we get down to spot number six. Since we're only on three now, there's little to worry about... yet, he added in an ominous tone.

Pick-a-Pair:
Trip to the Dominican Republic (4n, Barceló Hotel & Resort, 1d snorkeling cruise w/lunch; $4,882; MA)

Another pattern to pick up on, though not necessarily a helpful one: The value of a stage prize, or a package of stage prizes, is usually in direct proportion to the perceived difficulty of the game you have to play to win them. This is generally why games with high win percentages -- games like Pick-a-Pair, Bullseye, Cliff Hangers, and even Swap Meet -- usually have cheaper stuff on offer. When you start seeing things like that, that's usually a good sign that the Late-Season Budget Apocalypse has come.

It's nothing to be overly concerned about; it's been happening for years whenever it gets down to this point in a season. It's just part of life in Old Thirty-Three.

Of course, just because a game is likely to be won based on records, doesn't mean it's a slam dunk. Case in point.

I honestly can't decide whether the dog food or the Allerga is $6.99. This one's actually tricky. Let's see what Joseph does...

The good news: Now it's a coin flip.

The bad news: It really is a coin flip! That tens digit is just as likely to go either way, 2 or 3. All I can fall back on is my old instinct, the one which tells me that, unless there was a 0 in the tens column -- which there wasn't -- the correct digit is, nine times out of ten, the lowest one present.

So, naturally, I predict she'll pick the 3 and be wrong. Or will she?
