TPiRecap: 24 May 2013 (Salute to Firefighters)

Reminder: Monday is still marked on my schedule as a repeat, so in all likelihood we'll reconvene here Tuesday.

Episode # 6363K (Salute to Firefighters Spectacular)
Airdate 24 May 2013
VTR 14 April 2013
First Four Andrew, Katherine, Emmanuel, Jennifer (R-L)
Today's Models Manuela Abreález, Amber Lancaster, Gwendolyn Osborne-Smith

As you may have guessed from the info box above, today we have a Peanut Gallery full of people in the firefighting profession, as well as their families of course.

Drew claims this one wasn't his idea -- "I wanted to do a Salute to Cheerleaders, but..." He's kidding, folks. ;^) But he's not kidding when he credits firefighters for literally saving his life when he had a heart attack in his 40s.

Let's just hope today doesn't go the way of so many other "spectaculars" in recent memory and we actually have a decent payout on the day...

Even Hans is getting into the spirit of the day; he's dressed as a firefighter himself! (Now they need to switch out the mountain for one of those ladder extensions off the truck... maybe even have the guys with the trampoline ready to catch him if he falls off... the prop wizards could've gone even farther with the motif if they wanted to!)

Hans actually stopped for a moment at 25... just long enough for everyone in the studio -- and the Towers, for that matter! -- to think Jennifer had won, until he took that one final, fatal step. Maybe it's just a case of the machine being old (and the fact Hans hasn't fallen off his mountain in so long that the mechanics to do so were a bit out of practice), but even so, that was a painful way to start the show. (Arguably more so for Hans than Jennifer!)

By the way... "12 Steps to Death" would be an awesome name for a '70s-style kung fu movie, don't you think?

Much more like it!

Okay, so far so good, we're 1-for-2 on the day so far and things aren't looking too bad so far...

...Um... is it getting warm in here or is it just me?...

...Gah! What're you doing here?

Heard today was a Salute to Fire, so I thought I'd drop by -- for obvious reasons.

Erm... yes, well. Ah. It's actually a Salute to Fire Fighters, y'see --

What! You sayin' I can't fight or somethin'!?

...Great. I don't have time for this. ...Er, excuse me, Ma'am? Yes, you, with the hat and glasses.

 Hmm?

Could you take a look at this picture, and tell me what you see? [holds out a photo of a full moon]

It's a picture of a moon. A... full... moon... erghl...

 Oh no... you wouldn't...

 MOKOU-TAAAAAAN ♥♥♥

 GAH! You would!

[exit both, at top speed]

...Phew, glad that little interruption is over. Now... where were we -- ah yes, spot #3. We've got a car game to play!

Gas Money:
2013 Chevrolet Sonic LS (1.8L, elec power steering; MA)

Insert standard grousing from the standard quarters here... but let's see how far we get today. Here are the prices:

$14,029
$16,995
$18,299
$17,855
$15,595

As you can see, they've spared no expense to bring you this car. As a matter of fact, they've cut all expenses. ;^P But that's what Budget Mode can do to a show.

Since that's not a Spark, we can pretty much safely rule out its being $14K. But, since it is a stock Sonic, $15K is my pick for the pink slip this time. Avoid that one, if you can resist the temptation to pick it first or second that is.

Pick #1: $16,995

So far, so good, we're halfway home. Let's just hope she keeps up the good work, and doesn't do something silly...

$1,000
$3,000
$2,000

...and she doesn't!

Okay, we're at a stage we don't get to very often anymore. My logic remains sound so far (that the pink slip is lurking behind $15,595) and we're on the doorstep of a rare Gas Money victory. On the other hand, six grand is nothing to sneeze at either, and all Katherine has to do is say the word and it's hers.

She decides to...

Pick #4: $15,595

On the other hand, you never really know around here -- maybe my logic is off and the car really is $17K. It's been known to happen.

Lovely, a trip I can't look up. I need this like I need another untimely distraction...

Somebody call for an untimely distraction?

Man, what is it with the fire elementals today?

Just your lucky day, I guess.

Well, I'm still kinda pressed for time... Tell you what, as long as you're here, you can make yourself useful -- just kinda do your akuryo taisan thing on the dude at the production table. That's a real evil spirit if you ask me.

 Sure thing! [does so]

And now that that's out of the way, Manuela decides to help out her biggest fan, Emmanuel, by personally bringing the cameras over so he can get a good look at them (and a hug)!

Gut instinct says $18,270. Then again, this is the same gut that said the picture gags earlier would be funny. Take my gut for what it's worth.

  4. Samsung 60" 3D plasma HDTV w/glasses (MA)

Protip: The Holland Grill is a cheapie brand. Pretty safe to assume that one's not $2,585.

Unfortunately, everything else seems a likely candidate for the DP today... hey, Red! I thought you got rid of Richards's evil spirits already!

He must've put this together before I got to him. And if you call me "Red" again I'll Flame Sniper this place to the ground, buddy.

And so, once again, a spectacular ends in a less-than-spectacular fashion, at least as far as the Pricing Games go. But on the plus side, we did at least give a car away, which seems to be a rara avis these days (so much so that it Hertz).

...That was awful. I apologize.

  1. I learned that Tuesday's TPIR is also a rerun since that day is rerunning the TPIR episode saluting the 40th. anniversary of Young and the Restless aired back in March 2013 in memory of Jeanne Cooper who passed away earlier this month.
