TPiRecap: 23 September 2013 (The Answer to the Ultimate Question Season Premiere)

It's that time of year again again, folks...

Summer has come and gone, the kids are back in school, the leaves are starting to turn, Krogers nationwide have had Christmas aisles for almost a full month... the usual bit.

And of course, in our little corner of the world, we're preparing for the mind-boggling forty-second trip around the ol' Price is Right merry-go-round. That's a staggering notion in and of itself -- but as Ric Flair once said in a promo, "Space Mountain may be the oldest ride in the park, but it's still got the longest line!"

Because there are some new visual elements to the show this year -- namely, a new glass-look floor to the Turntable area and some spiffy new Showcase podia -- I've taken the opportunity to similarly do a bit of sprucing-up to the standard recap formatting during the off-season. It should look a lot cleaner than in the past, but as always, it may still need some fine-tuning and tweaking along the way, so please pardon our dust. If it works out the way I hope it does, however, it'll all be to the good.

Also, a new season means we're back to keeping full stats, which I had to abandon when my unplanned hiatus last year meant I could never effectively catch up. As usual, statistics will be published here on Fridays, shortly after the recap for that day's episode goes up.

And so, with all of that preamble out of the way, let's dim the lights, hit the music, and send Drew out through Door #2 to formally kick off Season 42 of The Price is Right! (And hopefully put that run of four consecutive DOBs in the recent Season 41 make-goods well behind us in the process!)

If nothing else, we can find out if Douglas Adams was right...

Let's do it!

"Spruced up" even applies to the intro, as we have a new iteration of the famous light frame, now festooned on either side with giant rotating $s. Unfortunately, the "flying icons" of famous Pricing Games have been done away with, an element I really liked of the Season 41 intro. On the other hand, we do see the CG logo kinda-sorta "exploding" in time with Door #2 as it opens, which is kind of a neat effect itself.

Oh, and that "shiny Turntable floor?" Apparently it wasn't installed yet when this episode was taped back in June. But it's coming... it's coming.

And so it falls to Kathryn to formally christen Season 42, with the good ol' Money Game:

Now, of course, is when it gets tricky -- I see three likely candidates for the last two digits; 61, 93, and 72, in descending order of probability. Kathryn, of course, has only two chances left. The odds are decidedly not in her favor...

Off to Door #2 for a "bro-moment" -- and the rollout of our newest Pricing Game, Do the Math:
  1. Samsung(?) 60" 3D LED Smart HDTV w/4 pairs of glasses (RR)
  2. Yamaha TTR-110E offroad motorcycle (DD)

Do the Math is a two-prize game played at Door #2, as you probably guessed from the above. A partial "equation" is shown, such as this one:

_ $1,160 =

3D HDTV
Motorcyle

The object is to fill in the blank with the appropriate operator, + or - in this case, in order to make the equation correct when the prices are revealed. If correct, Dylan wins both prizes and the $1,160 in cash to go with them. In short, this is a variant of Most Expen$ive; if you think the prize on the left is more expensive, you subtract the cash bonus, and if the one on the right is more expensive, you add it.

Dylan subtracts the price...

- $1,160 =

$3,400
$2,240

GO TO THE HEAD OF THE CLASS!

Not bad for a quickie game, but I doubt it'll ever achieve the primal popularity of something like Bargain Game or even Most Expen$ive itself. Still, it's nice to see the wizards conjure up a new game that doesn't involve a car or large amount of cash; this is only the second such game Price has debuted since 2003, the other being Double Cross.

Note that, under my new and more lenient records system, I'll only count Any Number as a "loss" if the player ends up with the Piggy Bank. The three-digit prize is good for a "partial" win, which is counted the same as a bailout has been since last season.

Either Barbara or Vera will have the "honor," if you can call it that, of being the first banishee to Leftover Island of Season 42 -- or perhaps they'll both have the even more dubious distinction of being the first two-fer in that department. But there's still a chance for one of the two to escape ignominy -- and I note that Vera has the advantage this time around.

Let's see who's getting that no-expenses-paid vacation to the Ohio River...

Pretty low-budget for a season opener, which is a bit of a downer. But still plenty of time to make a good first impression on this premiere week, wouldn't you say?

  1. Danielle will be Tiffany's replacement on LMAD once Tiffany goes on maternity leave. Apparently, she's getting her practice on Price first.

Those interested in seeing the shinny new set, won't have to wait long. Next Tuesday will be the first show aired to feature the set. It won't stay for long since that episode is airing out of order (it is the Breast Cancer Awareness special), but it will be a nice preview.

  2. I've got word that Danielle Demski will be subbing for Tiffany Coyne on Let's Make A Deal while she's on maternity leave. But then again, that was in August when the announcement was made.
