TPirecap: 1 October 2013 (Breast Cancer Awareness Special

Before we begin, a reminder that today we'll be getting our first look at the brand spanking-new Showcase podia -- but it's just a tentative glimpse for now, as starting tomorrow we revert back to the Season 38-41 versions for a little bit yet. My network of spies tell me the change won't be made permament until we get to the tapings held in late July or early August, which are still a few weeks away in the airing order. The same goes for the new Turntable floor, which for the first time in 41+ years (daytime) is not carpeted (shag or otherwise) but instead has a high-gloss mirror finish.

But in the meantime, there's something a bit more important about today's proceedings...

Breast Cancer Awareness Special

October is, of course, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and in honor of the occasion Price has, for the past several years, dedicated an entire episode to those who have survived, or otherwise had to deal with, the disease. Today is no exception, with a Peanut Gallery today full of "survivors, supporters, and fighters," as His Drewness puts it during the intro.

One such survivor is today's guest model, Giuliana Rancic of E! News, who brings out today's first IUFB...

Cynthia, who was diagnosed in 2000 and is now a 13-year survivor, plays Lucky $even:

For once, Mike is generous on the last digit, and it pays off! (But now I'm betting we won't see a 5 in that position until at least April...) Very nice win to kick off the day!

I KNEW IT

Note that, due to the theme of today's show, it's going to be very difficult -- to the point of impossiblitiy, really -- to call anyone a "loser." In my book, they've already won against a foe far more evil -- and threatening -- than any setup Mike Richards could concoct. So don't be surprised if the red LOSS doesn't even show up today as such.

Having said that, I had a feeling it was $7,295 from the start. Outdoor furniture isn't cheap to begin with, and Summerset is actually one of the pricier brands the show routinely offers in that department. (Recall that their outdoor kitchen islands, a very common prize the past few seasons, have regularly clocked in at just a shade under ten grand.)

It's hard to fault her for the pick, considering. I think I might have leaned that way myself under the same circumstances.

LaDora, a two-time survivor (ovarian cancer in 1997, breast cancer in 2010) and whose own daughter (age 41) is going through reconstruction as we speak, plays Bullseye:
Trip to Rome, Italy (6n, Hotel Atlante Star, daily breakfast, private guided tour of the Vatican(!); $11,500; GR)

A Vatican tour? Now that, I believe, is a Price is Right first.

  • Splenda granulated sweetener (1.9oz)
  • GUM toothbrush
  • Carnation Breakfast Essentials nutritional drink mix (10 pack)
  • Dole diced pears (4 4oz cups)
  • Glade scented candle (4oz)

Having just bought a toothbrush in the last week, I'll say four of them will get her on that plane...

That one hurt. I can't even remember the last time I saw all three "arrows" miss the target entirely like that -- LaDora doesn't even get to have her Last Chance with this. >_<

A day that started so well with a Lucky $even win (an increasingly rare occurrence these days) is starting to go downhill fast. Time for a rally, guys...

Debbie, nine years cancer-free, plays Double Cross:

  2. Yves St. Laurent desginer shoes (RR)

Memo to Drew from the Department of Constructive Criticism: Double Cross A) has been around for one full season now, and B) is (with the advent of Do the Math) no longer the newest game in the rotation. You no longer have to say "it's a fairly new game" or "you might not have seen it yet," or any variant thereof, when introducing it. It's as established as it's gonna get, I think.

The 0 was actually right? Impressive. That's twice now that Mike's played into player expectations when it comes to car prices!

Unfortunately, that now leaves us with the two hardest numbers...

In the process of living up to player expectations, Mike thwarted my own by going against the now-established (at least to me) pattern of the tens digit being the lowest number in that column. Oh well...

Default Win

And we learn a Price is Right by-law that rarely has to be enforced: Even if it's a default win, the Wheel still has to make one full rotation to make it official.

Showcases: Cynthia (true) top winner, Debbie (true) runner-up.

The new podia arrive! They actually look a bit more like the "classic" versions from '83-'05, with a modern color scheme and plasma screens. And for all you traditionalists, the ✽s have been restored to their rightful places for the first time since Drew took over, which is an improvement IMO.

Note the theme-appropriate colors, however (all pinks); when these podia are seen again, the displays will have the more standard blue background. Just FYI.

1. Tickled Pink
  • Trip to Ojai, CA (limo, 5n, The Oaks at Ojai; RR)
    • Daily meals
    • 2 spa & 2 salon treatments each
  • 2013 Toyota Prius c One hybrid (1.5L, carpeted mats, trunk mat; GR)
Cynthia bids $28,500.
(My bid: $24,691)

2. Giuliana Rancic Presents: A Survivor's Showcase
  • Trip to Washington, D.C. (6n, St. Gregory Luxury Hotel & Suites; GR)
    • I cannot help but chuckle at the accidental timing...
    • Daily breakfast
    • Guided evening tour
  • Trip to Riviera Maya, México (4n, Rosewood Maya Cova; GR)
    • 1 dinner
    • 60min spa treatment each
  • 2013 Fiat 500c Pop Cabriolet (1.4L, 5MT, power top; RR)
Debbie bids $25,000.
(My bid: $32,985)

In addition to the previously-mentioned bag and scarf, everyone in the Peanut Gallery goes home with a Helen Ficalora necklace & pendant -- which you can win yourself, along with the bags, at the usual place.

Of course, as previously noted, in my book everyone's a winner today, at least at a much bigger "game" than anything Studio 33 could throw at them. Thus, even though the winnings were anemic beyond the two big winners, I can't find it in my heart to complain about it.

Now, of course,
tomorrow might be another story... ;^P
