TPiRecap: 17 October 2013 (Big Money Week #4)

Let's assess our situation. After three days, we've offered a total of approximately $394,940 in inflated prizes during Big Money Week. Of that total, $130,000 (all in cash) has been claimed by contestants -- approximately 32.91%. Not great, but it's a lot better than we saw during the first version of this stunt last season, where technically none of the "inflated prizes" were claimed. (We did have Ani winning Pay the Rent, of course, but Pay the Rent is always played for $100K; it wasn't tinkered with at all for the special.)

Can we add to that today? I gotta warn you, based on what I know today's Big Money game to be, the odds aren't great; we're talking about a game that hasn't been won outright (in daytime at least) since February of 2007, during the Barker Administration. But as we saw with Stack the Deck on Monday, you just never know what will happen around here...

Let's do this!

Big Money Week #4

Note: The East Coast CBS feed was partially pre-empted for a Presidential speech, costing us the first three Pricing Games and a good portion of the first Showcase Showdown. The episode aired in its entirety on the West Coast feed, however, and the affected portions of this recap are reconstructed from the episode as posted to CBS.com early this evening, hence the delay.

Elroy gets the honor, if you didn't pick up on the subtle little hints I've been dropping, of being the first this season to walk the infamous Golden Road -- and see if we can't finally break the six-season futility streak.

Oh, and it should go without saying, but Golden Road is today's Big Money Pricing Game, with a real doozy of a prize at the end:
  1. Fashion accessories from a designer too cheap to pay us for a plug (RR)
  2. MyBathUSA.com steam shower with so many extras -- a hot tub, a refrigerator, even a TV -- you may never want to leave (CK)
  3. And "the big Treasure Hunt daddy of them all," as Geoff Edwards used to say... how about a frigging BENTLEY?! Specifically, a 2013 Bentley Continental GT (4.0L V8, 3-spoke single-tone heated steering wheel, contrast stitching, 21" 6 twin spoke alloy wheels, rearview camera, front ashtray w/cigar lighter(!), power boost, space-saving spare wheel, and a partridge in a pear tree with PYRO!!!; over $189,000; RR)

Well, it doesn't set the record for the most expensive prize ever offered on the show -- the Ferrari from last year's Big Money Week, at over $289K+, is still that -- but c'mon, it's a BENTLEY! How cool is that?

And to think it all starts with a simple packet of McCormick brown gravy mix: 62¢

And now, the big one.

I'm sorry, I'm having a tough time getting over this one. A Bentley may not exactly be a Rolls-Royce... but it's just one small step down the prestige ladder. That "only" makes it one of the most desirable luxury cars in the world today. And since the Ferrari went unclaimed last season, this would still be, to the best of my knowledge, the most expensive car ever actually won on an American game show if Elroy were to pull this off.

It would also, incidentally, immediately catapult Elroy into "biggest winner in the history of The Price is Right" status by a considerable margin.

The problem, of course: It could be any one of those numbers. Howevwer, I think I'm going with 2 on my end. My reasoning: I see a lot of high digits in the price; discounting the leading 1 as a necessity, the lowest digit showing is 5. That leads me to believe a lowbie is being concealed.

I suppose it could also be the 4, though. Around here, you never know.

Here's what Elroy chooses to do:

Memo to Drew: The odds aren't "against" Jyme -- or anyone else -- rolling five cars on the first try. In fact, since there are three cars on each die, the odds are actually 15:30 of doing so... and that reduces to 1:2, 50-50, however you want to express it, the same as if only one die was rolled. In other words, it's pretty much a straight-up toss of the coin, just with more "coins" involved. Just FYI. ;^)

And thus ends the most disappointing day so far in Big Money Week. It's all up to Plinko tomorrow... heaven help us.

1 comment:

  1. Personally, I would've counted this as a technical skunking. No games were won outright.
