TPiRecap: 4 October 2013 (with an unpleasant duty at the beginning)

But first an update on yesterday's ineligible contestant. As it turns out, it was likely yesterday's Showcase winner, Florida. She apparently worked as a freelancer for WBBM-TV when she lived in Chicago, and since WBBM is fully owned and operated by CBS, that made her technically an employee of CBS itself -- and the S&$ rulebook is clear on this subject. All employees of CBS, past or present, are ineligible to become contestants on a CBS-affiliated game show.

For the record, I don't believe Florida was intentionally trying to get around the rulebook. Being that she was a freelance worker, she probably didn't think it counted. Most likely it was one of those things that just slipped under the radar, but once Florida signed her release and the due diligence was done, the suits had to do what they had to do.

After careful thought, I have decided that in the interest of fairness, Florida's total will be deducted from the season stats. It won't affect the season win-loss totals (since she did lose her game, That's Too Much!, in any event), but her winnings for yesterday will be zeroed out and the car she won in her Showcase removed from the year-to-date stats. With that, yesterday's Leader Board now looks like this:

And that's how it will be reflected in the stats, which will be posted later on.

I regret that this is sometimes necessary, but it's a sad state of affairs all around when something like this happens. In this case I fault no one, however -- not Florida, not CBS, not the S&P guys. This appears to be simply a situation where something managed to slip through the cracks in an otherwise tight ship, and certainly not a case of someone trying to work the system. I don't think Florida even knew her freelance work would disqualify her from being a contestant, so it's not like I'm even accusing her of cheating or anything if by chance she's reading this. I'm not, at all. It's unfortunate, and I don't enjoy doing this either, but sometimes these things happen. Thankfully, they don't happen that often at all, at least in the bigger picture.

With that unpleasant duty now done and explained, let us move forward with today's proceedings as best we can...

One thing that hasn't changed with my new, more lenient Partial Win strategy is Let 'em Roll. I'll still count the game as a loss if something like this happens; a Partial will only be declared in case of bailout.

So, this is officially a loss. And an especially painful one at that. >_<

It's nothing personal, Courtney. You just stepped on a raw nerve -- if people bidding $1 when they're not last is a major pet peeve, someone who bids $1 when they're the first to bid is a severely major pet peeve.

SUICIDE

First rule of Contestant's Row: There's an unspoken $500 rock-bottom minimum value for an IUFB these days. If someone's already bid $500 or less, and you underbid that person, you have effectively removed any and all chances of your getting on stage in that round, hence the "SUICIDE" tag. Remember: Just because something looks cheap, doesn't mean it necessarily is... Price isn't getting these sunglasses at the corner 7-Eleven or at Walmart, you know.

Side note: If Errin's last chip goes into the $10K, she will have established a new Plinko daytime record; as of this moment, that record is $30,100. (The all-time record is $41,000, but that was set on a primetime MDS with the $10K slot upgraded to $20K.)

At this point it's the only thing left to play for; she already has the win (by my definition as well as that of tpirsummaries), so this is really just for pride and extra cash.

And...

  1. I'm not sure what the rules are exactly when a contestant's appearance is compromised by the disqualified player. I wonder of the Showcase loser is awarded the prizes or they just allow the contestants to appear at a future episode (ten-year rule does not legally apply to contestants whose appearance was compromised by the ineligible player).

In some contests, the rule on an ineligibility disappearing after x number of years is in play. If it goes by rule, the other eight contestants will be eligible to reappear on the show immediately (priority goes to the Showcase loser and the three contestants that did not make it out of Contestant's Row) since you cannot count an appearance when it is compromised by an ineligible contestant.
