TPiRecap: 18 November 2013 (Dream Car Week #1)

Time once again for a special week of shows, and this one has the potential to be either something really neat... or just another disappointment.

Dream Car Week #1

As anyone who's been a Price is Right fan for longer than, say, a week knows, there are at least two Pricing Games on each episode that feature a(t least one) car as the top prize, one game in each half. The cars are mostly utilitarian in nature, worth anywhere between $15,000 and $24,000 (with some outliers on either end of the spectrum), although every so often a luxury or sports car will get worked into the mix; your Corvettes, your Audis, your BMWs, your Lexi, etc. Such models are almost exclusively reserved for Golden Road or 3 Strikes. And every once in a blue moon, Price will offer up a "vintage" car, usually a restoration of a classic model from the past, in a game where its price is irrelevant to gameplay (Hole in One, Master Key, Let 'em Roll, your choice of GP or SP games usually played for much smaller stakes, and so on).

This week, however, the rules change just a teeny little bit. Every day this week, one of the car games on each show -- five in all -- will feature "dream cars," super-desirable models that are all but guaranteed to make the pulses of any car lover race like a well-tuned V8. And I ain't talking vegetable juice here! Think of it as Big Money Week with more horsepower.

Drivers, start your engines...

Pick-a-Number, technically being played twice in a row:

Good news, the set is back to its correct color today. Bad news, it's a hardmode setup, with the tens digit being the one missing:

Josephine's T-shirt says "Test Drivers ♥ Drew Carey," which is fitting -- she's going to be the first person to play for a Dream Car this week.

Unfortunately, if she's going to win it, it'll have to be in Temptation:
2014 Porsche 911 Carerra (elec sunroof, power folding side mirrors, 20" Carerra S wheels, sport design steering wheel, prem pkg w/power sport seats, Bose audio; HK)

Yeah... I hope you weren't thinking they were just gonna give these supercars away! You're gonna have to work for 'em if you want 'em. Even so, a game that's been won outright exactly once in the past six years doesn't really help matters. But, hope does spring eternal...

I would've changed the 2 and the 5. $91,746 looks much better to me -- not that I've done much pricing of Porches lately.

Josephine keeps $3,983 in prizes...

...SHE HAD IT.
...Excuse me, I... I think I need a moment.

[Twenty minutes of Zen later]

It always hurts when something like this happens in Temptation. Yes, walking away if you are at all unsure is the smart thing to do, especially when the cash award is nice and high (over two grand, in this case). And as you can see, I myself thought $92,745 was dead wrong, so I cannot possibly fault Josephine for her decision to take the sure thing here.

But jeez. That one's gonna leave a scar. If nothing else, however, it should prove to the naysayers out there that it is indeed possible for Tempty to be won much more often than the past several years would indicate. (Don't forget, the chances of getting the right price in this game are effectively 1:16, and perhaps even 1:8 if the thousands digit is dead simple, which it actually wasn't today. Regardless, even 1:16 is hardly insurmountable.) Besides Lady Luck being on a player's side, all that's necessary is for the player to have the confidence and courage to risk a nontrivial amount of prizes on a roll of the dice.

There's just no way to put a happy face on this one, guys. At least Josephine got some nice gifts out of the deal, but she's gonna be thinking about "what could have been" for the rest of her life.

All we can do is try to pick up the pieces somehow and carry on, so that is what we shall attempt to do. Maybe we can still salvage something good out of today despite that absolute heartbreaker.

Not only has Checky won for the first time since 2009 (thanks to its hiatus), but Courtney was just one dollar short of perfection, something only achieved once (as far as I can tell) in this game's history. Very well done, Courtney!

It doesn't quite make up for the disaster in Temptation, but it certainly helps!

That's Too Much! -- in a rare twist, actually not the most evil car game on a given episode:

Frankly, I was expecting this to be one of the Dream Car games. But hey, I'll take it. This just means the game could actually be winnable.

Day 1 of Dream Car Week, and we coulda-woulda-shoulda given away a Porsche. Part of me fears that'll be the closest we get to giving one of these cars away all week, but... well, we'll see, won't we?

Back tomorrow with more...
