TPiRecap: 19 November 2013 (Dream Car Week #2)

Before we begin today, I'd like to acknowledge something significant that happened about a month ago, yet was totally missed by not only yours truly, but a lot of notable figures in the game show universe.

On 25 October, Price presented their Salute to Teachers Special. One of the contestants on that episode was an adult-education teacher, Karen Levein. She came and went without much fanfare (losing Eaƨy Aƨ 1-2-3), but as it turns out, she's had some prior game show experience.

As a matter of fact, back in 1977, she -- as Karen Rachman -- became one of the elite few contestants to have scaled the mountain known as The $100,000 Name That Tune, as hosted by Tom Kennedy. You can watch the YouTube clip of her big win here.

A special tip of the ol' chapeau to Steve Shuffield for alerting me to this rather neat development, however after the fact it may have been. ^^;

And now, on with more Dream Cars.

Dream Car Week #2

Computer geeks with a background in the 8-bit home computers of the1980s will probably chuckle at today's episode number. (The 6502 chip, or a minor variation thereof, was the CPU for many computers back in the day, including the Apple II, Atari 400/800/XL/XE, Commodore PET/VIC-20/64/128, and even the NES.)

Of course, you didn't come here for a programming lesson, you came here to find out what happened with today's big-time car game, and I'm flattered you chose my blog to find out on. So, let's go!

Jason, who just graduated from Clemson but is now working on a golf course (his degree is in turf management) is the lucky(?) recipient of today's Dream Car offer, on...

Well, why don't I lay the car on you first.

2014 BMW 640i convertible (3.0L 6c, multi-contour seats, ceramic controls, cold weather pkg, 19" V-spoke wheels, paint/fabric prot; $87,516; MO)

The fact George read the ARP of the car should tell you what kind of game we're about to play, and the fact I haven't mentioned the game itself yet -- but did mention Jason's degree -- should be the giveaway.

Indeed, in one of those description-defying coincidences that can sometimes happen on an unscripted show, the guy who works on a golf course is gonna play Hole in One (or Two).

Depending on how well he knows his GPs, I think we could be about to give this Beemer away. The stars seem to be aligned properly, but how about these products that Rachel is now showing us?:
  • Mott's applesauce (24oz)
  • Gold Bond Ultimate Diabetic foot lotion
  • Payday candy bar
  • Gillette MACH3 razor w/2 cartridges
  • Whink Cook Top cleaner
  • Krusteaz blueberry pancake mix

Obviously, the Payday bar is the cheapest thing on here. After that, I'd go with the pancake mix, the applesauce, the cleaner, the foot cream, and finally the razor.

This, however, is Jason's arrangement, not mine.

Pretty much agreeing with me, except he reverses the applesauce and the pancakes.

$500 Bonus

Wow! I can't even tell you when was the last time we actually gave away that bonus (which really needs to be updated, by the way; make it at least a thousand bucks). And that's not even considering what we're playing for this time! (For some reason, however, Drew doesn't even mention it. Probably because $500 is chump change compared to an 87K BMW, but also probably because it's been so long since it was claimed that he just forgot about it.)

Like I said... the stars are aligned just right to see this happen. All that's left is to just make it official -- but first, there are some formalities to account for, such as...

Drew's Inspiration Putt:
He actually sinks it! (Only the third or possibly fourth time in his tenure so far...)

Okay, if Drew can make a putt from way back at the start, surely Jason can tap it in from the gimme line! (Drew: "If you miss this, your friends will never talk to you again!)

Better get that pink slip ready, guys...

Jason's First Putt:
...Because Jason's gonna be needing it!
DREAM CAR WIN!

I won't say that makes up for yesterday's heartbreaker with Josephine and Temptation, because honestly it doesn't. Still, you almost never see this happen anymore in this game. Perfectly played, easily won, and Jason is now up an $87,516 luxury convertible. All in the span of about three minutes.

We salute you, Jason! That was one of the coolest wins so far in Season 42!

That act's gonna be hard to follow... but follow it we must. We do still have four more games, two Showdowns, and the Showcases still to come, after all. Who knows how high we can push the winnings today?

For the record, we're already at $102,839. The high-water mark for the season so far is $172.382, established the day Cassidy hit up ½ Off for a hundred grand during Big Money Week. That's certainly within reach, especially if the "normal" car game is won too.

Let's find out where we can go from here...

  • Frigidaire Affinity washer & dryer (MO)
  • HP 27" all-in-one computer (4GB RAM, 1TB HD, wireless AIO; RR)
  • Barney's New York designer shoes (RR)

"Danger" is right; this game hasn't been won very often of late. And with both a non-Apple (and relatively cheap-looking) computer and the random-number generators that are the shoes, both of which have about an equally likely chance to be worth $1,045, this could get ugly in a hurry.

For my own part, however, I'd stay away from the computer.
(Mountain bikes: $3,398; Computer: $2,521)

I was afraid of that. I would've at least picked the bikes first before flipping that coin; I knew those couldn't possibly have ended in 5.

Those shoes just trampled all over our hopes for a perfect show.

I'm not even going to bother with that 07 this time. I've learned my lesson that El Cheapo is now used as a feinting tactic more often than not.

I have three options to go with; they are, in descending order of preference, $18,920, $18,966, and $19,998. (Yes, I do suspect Mike would pull that last stunt.)
