TPiRecap: 12 December 2013 (Happy 90th Birthday, Bob Barker!)

We're in the midst of a Pet Adoption week celebating the start of the ninth decade of a certain Mr. Robert W. Barker, with today (12 December) being his actual birthday. And of course, the worst-kept secret in Television City is that today we're going to be joined by a certain very special guest of the two-legged variety as well as our customary four-legged friend.

The only question is, will this "guest" be doing more than just, well... "guesting?"

There's only one way to find out, and that's to proceed ahead...

Drew reminds us of the significance of this day, and we debut a special "90" graphic on the Plinko Plasma in honor of our favorite nonagenarian... who will, in fact, be joining us later on in the show.

But that's for later. For now, we have today's Holiday Gift Idea to get us out of the blocks:

We kick off today's proceedings with a game that was always one of Bob's favorites, It's In the Bag:
  • Zicam Rapidmelts cold remedy
  • Ziploc divided food containers w/lids (2)
  • Duncan Hines cake frosting
  • Method Steel for Real cleaner/polish
  • Mrs. Redd's cherry pie
  • Tony's frozen pizza

Bob may have liked this one, but I've always been somewhat ambivalent towards it. It's one of the harder GP games in the lineup, and frankly it's almost as tough as Pay the Rent in my estimation -- for a mere 16% of the newer game's reward.

(Also note that all the GPs on the table here are vegan-friendly, just like Bob used to do it.)

In any event, after the first two bags (which are only too obvious to play along with, as usual), I'd put the pizza in $2.69, the cleaner in $6.49, and the containers in $4.29. This one isn't too bad, but only if you stop to think about it. Let's see if Lori does.

Yeah, no way in Hades was that pizza worth $4.29 even in LA. As Baggy setups go, this one wasn't too bad, though the frosting trap obviously would have caught me.

But hey, after the way the last few days have gone, I'll take an $8,000 bailout to start with as a good sign.

WIN!

Yeah, that one felt pretty safe. I can feel it in my bones now, we're gonna break this week-long slump!

...I hope...

But hey, things are looking up, because we're about to roll out our ultimate lucky charm.

Returning to Studio 33 for the first time since 2008, it's the man himself, the WGMC, the one and only Bob Barker! He enters through Door #2, because where else would he come in from (since we're not playing Golden Road today)? And note that when he's introduced, the sound booth cues up the pre-2007 version of the theme (it was slightly remixed and modernized when Drew took over, though most casual viewers might not notice the difference unless the two themes are played side-by-side), something I didn't think they still had in there.

Naturally, the Peanut Gallery gives Bob a rousing standing O and even a "BOB! BOB! BOB!" chant. "I didn't get welcomes like that until I became 90!" quips Bob.

He has, of course, brought today's Special Guest with him, escorted by Rachel (incidentally, she and Gwendolyn can still legitimately be referred to as "Barker's Beauties," the last of that breed): P.B., an adorable little guy who's even wearing a birthday shirt in honor of the day! P.B. is visiting us from the North Central Animal Shelter, where he's up for adoption. "It won't be too hard," admits Rachel, her heart apparently stolen.

After that bit of happy business is transacted, Bob tells the story of how, when he first met Drew after he was officially named Bob's successor, he was going to ask Drew to continue the traditional spay-and-neuter signoff, only to learn he didn't have to; Drew had already decided he was going to do that on his own. ^^;

Bob will, naturally, be with us throughout the rest of the show. On we go with our next spot...

Let's find out if Willi can keep from shooting himself in the foot with this one... But first, we're about to do something that has never been done in all the forty-one years and a bit that The Price is Right has been on CBS.

He hosted the show for 35 years and over 6,800 episodes (more if you include the syndie and the primetime specials), he's won more Emmys than you can count, he's given away more cars than anyone in the history of television, he's been a champion for animal rights, he's delivered karate kicks to malfunctioning Pricing Games, and he's even been chased by Samoans... but in all that time, there is still one thing Bob Barker has never done on The Price is Right.

Until now, that is.

Over at the Gray Area, George cedes the microphone to Bob, who provides us with our next Come On Down. He does a pretty good job too, considering the relative weakness of his voice these days; certainly no Johnny Olsen or Rod Roddy, but better than many of the fill-in announcers from a few years back! ;^)

WIN!
(Cameras: $820; Piggy Bank: $4.13)

I officially redact my "Uh-oh!" Gail became the first and only contestant to ever get called on down by Bob Barker, won her way on stage, and won a car (in the game that was both Bob's first-ever and last-ever Pricing Game spot)! Now that's what I call a day!

And on the opposite end of the spectrum, there is Willi, whose consistent lowball bidding has put him in the unenviable position of being so close to banishment that I actually considered unretiring the F4 Vultures in his honor. But no, all he'll get is a trip to Leftover Island if he fails to make it out of the Row.

Aww... I was pulling for Darien to win that, honestly. If Darien had won her way on stage and made it to the Showcases, between her name and Hollie's hairdo, my inner fanboy would just have a field day with that combination. ;^)

But it is instead David who escapes the Row in this last chance, and while Willie goes to pack his bags for the trip nobody wants around here, David will try to win a trip to a much nicer locale than the Ohio River in Range Game:
Trip to New Orleans, LA (6n, Windsor Court Hotel, Creole dinner cruise; RR)

Drew doesn't do it, but in honor of Bob's birthday, I'll bust out the old chestnut here: "Don't press that button until you're sure you want to stop it, because we can't start it again for 37 hours!" ^^;
Not much you can say about this, just a nice win in a relatively easy game.

Drew confirms that, yes, Bob will be presenting one of the Showcases...

Again, there's no CC plug here. I'm at a loss...

1. It May Be Bob's Birthday, But All the Presents Are For You!
  • Apple 27" iMac computer (3TB HD, 16GB RAM, multimedia speakers, Epson AIO; RR)
  • "Trip" to Hollywood, CA (limo, 4n, Loews Hollywood Hotel; RR)
    • In honor of the world-famous "Hollywood" sign, which also turned 90 this year
    • Daily breakfast
    • Helicopter tour
  • 2014 Ford Focus SE (2.0L, 5MT, rear mats; GOS)
Gail passes; Hollie bids $18,375.
(My bid: $26,590)

2. As Promised, the Birthday Boy Himself, the One and Only Bob Barker, Presents a Showcase to the Only Contestant He Personally Ever Called Down
  • "I think these people realize that we're practically soul mates," jokes Bob..

Even at 90, Bob still has those great ad-libbing skills! Observe the following:

Bob: "This first prize, the scenery is just breathtaking!"
Gail: "Is it Alaska?"
Bob: "No, no... [Peanut Gallery laughs] Although, that description fits Alaska too, of course... I see beaches, I see palm trees..."
Gail [interrupting]: "Hawaii?"
Bob: "[beat]... Hawaii! That's it!"

  • Trip to Maui, HI (6n, Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa; GOS)
    • Lunch & guided rain forest hike

Next up, Bob tells a story about how he had always dreamed of pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals as a boy, and one day when he was hosting the Miss Universe pageant, legendary Cardinals manager Whitey Herzog called Bob into his office and actually signed him to a deal: The Cardinals organization would pay Bob one dollar a year for life, on the condition that Bob never throws a single pitch. (We've even got the photos to prove it happened!)

All of which is, of course, a roundabout way of building up to our next prize...

  • Trip to St. Louis, MO (4n, Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis; GOS)
    • 2 spa treatments
    • 1 dinner
    • Bonus: 2 tickets to a 2014 Cardinals home game, with a VIP tour of Busch Stadium 3.0 and field access for batting practice
      • Hey, if Drew can push Sounders games on the show, why not? ;^) I kid, of course...

And hey, since we finally gave Bob a chance to do a Come On Down, let's give him a shot at another famous Johnny/Rod/Rich/George-ism and introudce Gail's final prize -- "A new CARRR!"

  • 2014 Chevrolet Sonic LT (1.8L, 6AT, remote vehicle start, paint/fabric prot; RR)
Gail bids $39,000.
(My bid: $29.990)

We've got Hollie's bid, which I think is way too low, and Gail's, which I think is way too high. But let's see how this goes...

I was right in my assumptions, but not by as much as I thought I'd be.

As we take our leave, Bob and Drew do a duet on "Help control the pet population, have your pets spayed or neutered!" "That was not an Emmy-winning performance," Bob adds mock-ruefully.

Well, what more can I say? I know some people have different opinions about Bob, and they all come by them honestly... but while there is certainly a time and a place to discuss all of that, at the moment, this forum is neither. Besides which, I do feel confident in saying that Price wouldn't be the show it is today without him, so it's totally fair to salute him on his birthday like this.

So, a hearty "Happy birthday, Bob!" from all of us here at TPiRecap Towers!
