TPiRecap: 10 January 2014

Sorry about yesterday. Above and beyond another cable hiccup nuking my DVR recording, an uncooporative computer decided to sabotage my efforts to even watch the CBS.com version of the episode. Everything's fine now -- and based on what I learned about that show when hunting down the numbers, maybe it was for the best. A 10 Chances playing gone to hell, a true WTF moment in Danger Price, and a painful Showcase overbid by just two bucks... yeah. Asprin would definitely have been consumed like Altoids here at the Towers.

We're back in the saddle today, but before we begin, there's something I should address. A lot of you have been wondering what the status is of my looking for someone new to do this after the end of the season, as well as exactly when my last show will be. To answer the second question first, I fully intend to see out Season 42 to the bitter end, which at the present moment (barring the necessity of any additional make-good summer airings) would make my last recapped episode the Back to School Special airing on 15 August.

As for finding a successor, I'm working out the details as we speak. I'm hoping to have something concrete up by Valentine's Day or thereabouts, but the general idea is this: There will be some sort of "open audition" where you can go into YouTube, find a full-length episode to recap, then send me a sample of what you can do. I'll then have the ones I deem the best put up for a vote (so make sure whatever you send me is in a state where it's fit for consumption on a rated-PG website such as this. There'll be a bit more to it than just that, however, as there are specific things I want to look for and certain style requirements; I'm still trying to work out all the details in the best possible way. Stay tuned.

Once again, do not send me anything now. When the process begins, and I plan to have it begin absolutely no later than March Madness week (17-21 March, which is the next scheduled break in the airing order), you'll know. Until that time, it's strictly business as usual around here. Technology permitting, of course.

And speaking of that business, let's be about it for today...

Bargain Game:

This one's obviously the pool table. $2,500 doesn't even come close to the ARP of most Opulent Items things, and if I didn't know the rules of the game I'd say $2,800 was too high for a TV like that.

That's as bad as the $800 fridge in yesterday's Danger Price. I'm beginning to think the motto for this show in the current era should be "Omnia Scitus, Malum" ("Everything You Know is Wrong," assuming I did this correctly).

SUICIDE

I will award ten thousand Internets to the first person who can somehow convince me that a bid like Rebecca's can in any respect be considered a "good move." Bidding a dollar more than the last person is unfair to the other person... bidding a dollar less than the last person is unfair to you. Think about it... the game isn't "closest to the retail price," it's "closest to the retail price without going over," with those being the crucial words that make the whole thing work. Underbidding by $1 puts you further away from the prize than the other person if it's not an overbid, and really the only way to win if you do that is for your bid to be a perfecto.

I actually dared to think this one was looking winnable. The Peanut Gallery, to their credit, did try to warn him away from it (they seemed to be favoring the $21K tag), but he didn't listen.

Time for Morgan to go to the Showcases... but first, we have a visitor to the stage, Nicholas, Morgan's boyfriend (to whom she gave a shout-out during her spin). I won't go into detail on exactly what happened here, but suffice to say, Nicholas has a handheld. And a ring. And a certain question to ask. And so we have yet another one of those Price is Right Proposals™ that've been so popular over the past ten years. ;^)

BTW, for those keeping score... Of course she said "Yes!" Hee.

Showcases: The newly-engaged Morgan is today's top winner, Paul the runner-up.

1. To Go With Morgan's New Ring, Here's a "Jewel" of a Showcase...

Morgan bids $26,400.

2. Take It Outside, Guys!
  • Lloyd Flanders Fairhope outdoor seating group (RW)
  • Trip to Singapore (6n, Parkroyal on Pickering; RW)
    • Daily breakfast
    • Evening cocktails
    • Rooftop lounge access
  • 2014 Chevrolet Cruze LS (1.8L, MT, remote keyless entry; RR)
Paul bids $29,000.

  1. So, you're deliberately skipping the January 9th episode of "Price", or you'll do a full recap when it reairs on TV?

    1. Haven't decided. I may go back and do a no-frills sort of recap from the CBS.com posting by Wednesday evening, but my hand injury now makes that a dicey prospect.
