TPiRecap: 7 February 2014

Just to flag up something we all appeared to miss, not just here but in several other places I've been to: Assuming I've read the numbers at the tpirsummaries website correctly, Wednesday's playing of Double Prices was the 1,500th playing ever of Price's third-oldest game. By a narrow margin of five, it is the most frequently-played Pricing Game in the show's 41½-year history (the runner-up is Most Expensive, which should also hit 1,500 before spring).

And with that, let's wrap up the week, hopefully in style...

Remember the famous Holmesian quote (now infinitely more associated with a certain Vulcan): "Eliminate the impossible and whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth." There was no way those bowls were $60, which meant the grill set had to be $144 no matter how crazy -- dare I say "how gross?" -- that price may have looked. It's a rule of thumb more stage players would do well to remember, especially in this game.

That guy in the new H&R Block commercials hid your money in box #13 today. Only the second time ever -- and the other time was just earlier this season, too. Consider that longtime taboo well and truly busted.

Somebody take these people to Google Maps and teach them what "provinces" are, hmm? ;^)

$7,129, says I. $9,083 would be a viable alternative, but as we all know, it's never the first price in line.

Then again, box #13 used to be off-limits for money-hiding purposes in ½ Off. Rules, even unwritten ones, were made to be broken. Bah, I'm still goin' with $7K for this trip.

Random thought that just popped into my head: Check-Out is perfectly fine as it is, and I'm not advocating any kind of change to it. However, it just occurred to me that they could, if they wanted, work in a bonus rule on the order of what they've done with Shell Game. If, let's say, the contestant wins and is within 50¢ of the actual total -- which was, you may recall, Check-Out's original winning range -- s/he would get a cash bonus equal to the ARP of the prize s/he already won. This seems like a good idea on the grounds that this game can sometimes be won by sheer luck, but an additional reward for smart shoppers is hardly out of order.

Thoughts? Leave 'em in the comments section.

  1. A bonus for Check Out would be nice. Heck, I wouldn't mind other games awarding a bonus for good play. Like Rat Race. If a contestant gets all 3 rats, then they get a cash bonus of some sort. Maybe $500, maybe $1,000. Speaking of RR, if someone nails the exact price of one of the items, they get the other 2 rats for free similar to Spelling Bee.

  2. I'm in agreement with that. That would be cool. I like the idea of a $1,000 bonus in Rat Race and Ca$h = to the ARP for Check Out.
