TPiRecap: 14 March 2014

In case you missed it yesterday, I'll reiterate it now: The retirement I had planned for myself after the end of Season 42 is now postponed indefinitely. I'll still be here for Season 43 and beyond, barring any major life changes for me in the meantime (and if that happens, I will let you know about it).

As to why this change of heart took place? Well, just check the blog. You'll find your answer in a recent post. I will say no more lest I draw undue attention to someone or something that's unworthy of it.

So with that hash settled, let's get on with it already.  Also, sorry for yesterday's recap looking kind of funky.  It should be fixed now.

Almost positive the pizza oven is $70 and the citrus press $55. After that it gets hazy, but I can pretty much narrow the car number down to 1 or 2.

Let's see just how far off base I really am, though.

Maybe I'm not so useless after all, since the car price did end up being what I thought it was (or one of the two, anyway). Still, ouch.

If I could interject a small(-ish) observation at this time...

Let's take a look at the breakdown of how the change lines up on the board.

(2) .00
(4) .05
(5) .10
(4) .25
(3) .50
(1) .75
(1) 2.00

Nine out of the twenty slips give you 25¢ or more, which are the numbers you're really looking for (since each incorrect guess raises the car price by a quarter). You have slightly worse-than-even odds of picking at least one of those slips during the game. Also note that even if you completely botch the pricing aspect of the game, the highest possible price tag on the car would be $2.75 -- and you can still get there a few different ways, though all of those ways involve also picking the $2 card (a 19-1 long shot).

The game mechanic here is fair despite the slight imbalance on the board -- seriously, do we really need two zeroes? -- and despite being a luck-based game at the end of the day, it does offer suitable rewards and punishments for players based on how well (or, conversely, how badly) they can price the car. It's an interesting setup, all things considered.

Okay, scholarly analysis over, let's get on with the game now...

SHOWS WHAT I KNOW!

Finally! Just when things were looking bleak. (Of course, now they look bleak anyway, because guess where we're going back to after the horizontal line... The bidding in Contestant's Row today has been... less than stellar, you could safely say.)

This is Sally's last chance to escape from Leftover Island, but the way things have been going in the Row so far today, I'm not exactly optimistic. But hey, stranger things have happened -- and she does have the advantage, after all. Who am I to say?
