Earth Day Spectacular

As is always the case with this special, all of today's prizes are either eco-friendly (for the health of your local planet) or are produced by companies that support "green" initiatives.

(Important note I wouldn't have to add in a more perfect world, but alas, we live in this one: The TPiRecap blog is an apolitical, non-controversial entity. Please keep it that way in your comments, should you choose to leave any. That means no flamewars over climate change, no screeds about "these evil corporations are killing the only planet we have" or "these dirty hippies are killing every innovation we come up with," or anything at all along those lines -- and that includes anything that makes you look like you're spoiling for such a fight. We can at least try to be civil here, and enjoy an episode like this strictly for what it is. If you must blow off steam, do it somewhere else -- it's not welcome on my site. We cool? Good.)

With the ground rules laid down for all, let's get this party started.

Well, since it's kind of a special day, why don't we kick it off with a game we only play on special occasions in any event -- Triple Play (I can hear the groans already):

The good news is, this time it's actually easy for me to look up any cars that aren't revealed, since they're all hybrids (and thus easily identified on the Toyota, Ford, and Chevrolet websites)

1. 2014 Toyota Prius c-One (1.5L, AT, rear bumper protector; RR)

(GOS with the tags)

triple play

$16,250
$19,625

$16 seems obvious to me here, but he goes with $19K... I hope that doesn't equal an early exit...

$19,969

NO
YES

...it doesn't! Unfortunately, note that there was only a $344 difference between the ARP and the correct tag -- and of course, this game doesn't get any easier.

2. 2014 Ford Fusion SE hybrid (2.0L, AT, remote keyless entry; GOS)

(RR with these tags)

triple play

$23,110

$25,321
$27,289

Hmm... the last time I saw a Fusion, I think it was in the $23-24K range, so I'd be tempted to go with the $23,110 here. But I was just wrong one car ago, so what I think isn't particularly reliable.

That said, I think $27K is way overdoing it. But Marcelo and the Peanut Gallery both gravitated to this one immediately, and since Niagara Falls cannot be diverted...

NO
YES

...that's probably a good thing!

It was 27 June of last year that saw the most recent Triple Play that went to the third car -- so the good news (for me as a statkeeper, anyway) is, win or lose, we'll have accurate numbers for today. And now the bad news...

3. 2014 Chevrolet Volt (1.4L, Voltech electric drive, solar absorbing glass; RR)

(Rachel also pulls double duty with this last set of tags)

triple play

$33,270

$35,640
$38,698

$41,879

He actually went with my pick this time... but I was just dead wrong twice in a row, so what do I know?

Let's find out...

...as it's time to abuse the ol' Enter key...

...to see if we're about to have our first Triple Play win in almost 6½ years...

...(It was last won on 6 December 2007)...

HEARTBREAK

At this time, I would like to propose a new rule for this game that might mitigate some of this painfulness whenever it's lost. How does this strike you: If the player gets the first car right, offer him/her a $1,000 buyout. After the second car, make it a $5,000 buyout. Just something simple like that.

Any takers?

Judging by the price, I guess this could have been a perfect spot for Check Game, but the PTB decided a game involving waste paper wasn't in good taste for an Earth Day special. ;^)

(...That was what we in the business call a "joke," folks. Try not to take it too seriously.)

$5,439, I think.

Should've kept the first one, alas. This game, which used to be all but a guaranteed W, has gotten decidedly nastier in recent months... wonder why.

And here I was thinking she had that 7 right the first time. Once again, it shows you what I know about this show anymore. >_<

Would a win or two be too much to ask at this point? C'mon, it's Earth Day -- depression is bad for the environment!

As of this moment, there are four undefeated games on the roster -- or three, if what I've heard about Magic # being officially put on hiatus is accurate. Bonus Game is the highest-profile one of this lot... but the way things have been going today, I don't feel too good about it staying that way after the next three or so minutes.

2. Saving the Planet, One Prize at a Time

  • 2014 Honda Insight LX hybrid (1.3L, CVT, side-impact door beams; GOS)
Susan bids $25,000.
(My bid: $21,483)

Susan looked like she wanted to change her bid, but unfortunately the new control software is such that once your bid is locked in, it cannot be changed.

I have a sick feeling in my gut about both of these bids, as you can probably tell by my own guesses. All I can do is cross my fingers and hope we're not gonna get bitten by our twelfth DOB of the season.

  1. I have a question about the "Triple Play" buyout. Would the buyout be offered immediately after they make the correct choice (that is, before the next car description)? Just curious.

    1. I had a feeling about that. I think it's a great idea, but I don't know if too many people would take it.
