TPiRecap: 4 April 2014

As you've probably heard by now, Monday will mark the 8,000th episode of The (New) Price is Right on CBS. Expect all the usual hoopla accompanying such a milestone.

Here's the official CBS press release.

Meanwhile...

Sigh... This used to be one of my favorite games. People constantly playing it like that, however, is making me fall out of love with it in a hurry. I guess it's just indicative of the cynical age we live in, though... nobody trusts anything you tell them, even if it's the truth.

On the plus side, however, he actually picks what would have been my first choice.

BUT ALL FOR NAUGHT
($21,810)

Maybe it's time they considered switching to the higher/lower SP format of, say, Bonus Game or Punch-a-Bunch, tradition be damned. Maybe then we'll see players getting more than just one or at most two picks -- and it still wouldn't break the game or guarantee a winner.

Oops. The prop gremlins have struck again, it seems; those numbers (which should read 8429) aren't sliding correctly today. (IMO, they always looked a bit flimsy to me anyway.) Don't worry, Drew's here to fix things...

And of course, the one price I cannot possibly look up is the only price unrevealed in this game. I am spitting acid at the moment. Seriously, guys, would it friggin' kill you to do a full reveal in this game if it's won?!

[1] Here's what I ended up doing. I took the difference between Teresa's total and what I knew for sure of Janice's, which was $1,974, and using that figure I extrapolated a likely price for those accessories based on previous appearances of similar Kate Spade handbag collections. With this information, I determined that the accessories were most likely in the neighborhood of $1,500, so that's the figure I plugged into my spreadsheet to at least give me an acceptably rational total for Janice's winnings. In case it isn't obvious, I utterly despise having to resort to such book-cooking and would immeasurably appreciate it if the show would simply adopt a consistent price-reveal policy for this game. Otherwise the only way I can figure out such mystery prices is if the contestant in question ends up winning the Showcase and his/her total is flashed onscreen somehow.

One of these days, people will learn... at least that's what I keep telling myself. We live in hope.

The other thing I keep hoping against hope that people will pick up on. Not just that the absolute bare minimum an IUFB can be valued at anymore is $500 (the three leftovers at the end of the show get about that much as a consolation prize), but also that the cutlery sets this show offers are not from the bargain basement.

Through the years with the Price logo, in various vintage TV sets from the '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, and today. (Hard to believe that Drew's era has lasted long enough that it can take up two of the five slots. Time sure flies, doesn't it?)

Meh.

Robert is one IUFB away from being sent to Leftover Island -- though the way he's been bidding the last two rounds, maybe he's got some family down in the Ohio Valley he'd like to see. Regardless...
