TPiRecap: 7 April 2014 (8,000th Episode Celebration)

To be honest, you almost didn't read this recap at all. I had a rough night last night while wearing another hat, so to speak, and following coverage of an event beyond the scope of our present discussion. As a result, it was nigh around sunrise before I finally collapsed and got a few merciful hours of sleep. Frankly I was ready to just punt today altogether and come back on Tuesday fully refreshed... but that's when I remembered.

Today is something a little bit special in the annals of Price history, and it would look very bad indeed if I were to let it go unreported.

So, here I am, admittedly neither bright-eyed nor bushy-tailed, but ready to give this special aninversary show everything I've got. However, I ask you to please be forgiving of any spelling mistakes or other glitches that I may incur over the course of this recap (as usual, I'm writing this intro before I hit Play on my DVR). I'll do my best to not make any, but some may slip through my internal editor. Just bear with me and all will be well.

And now, with that out of the way...

Note
8,000th Episode Celebration

Interesting to note that based on the production number, this show was originally to have aired last Wednesday, immediately following the April Fool's stunt with Craig Ferguson. I'm not sure why it was bumped to today, except perhaps to guess that someone doesn't like having two major "gimmick" episodes back-to-back like that. Or maybe someone did their math wrong. As I type this I don't know, and I'm sure someone will set me right eventually.

Small matter, though. As you might have guessed from the data box above, today we celebrate the 8,000th CBS episode of our little daily carnival. There are balloons, decorations, and gratuitous repetitions of the number "8,000" throughout the studio in honor of this momentous day.

We waste no time in getting started:

1. Apple iPhone 5c w/silicone case & 1yr calling plan (3GB data & 450 mins/mo) (JE)

Hopefully you're not too surprised to learn that the first game we play today was also the first game we played 7,999 episodes ago, the venerable Any Number:
  1. Sony Vaio 15" laptop computer (750GB HD, 8GB RAM)
  2. 2014 Dodge Journey SE FWD (2.4L, 4AT, flexible seating grp, UConnect w/Bluetooth, 2nd row seat w/child boosters, paint/fabric prot; MA)

Drew points out that besides its status as the Grandaddy of Them All, Any Number was alse played on the 1,000th episode as well. I guess that's our theme for scheduling today... favorite games from past milestone episodes.

(SUV: $22,864; Laptop computer: $950 -- I knew it)

Ugh. Definitely not a good way to start a day like this. Part of me wanted to see the SUV be $22,746; chop off that ten thousands digit and you're left with the price of the famous baby-blue Chevrolet Vega that Connie won in this game all the way back on 4 September 1972 to kick off the series. Just a subtle little Easter egg for all the oldschool fans.

Hopefully we can rebound from this disappointment...

Probably the scooter, but I'm not confident of that.

Bob Barker welcomes us back from the CC plug, or rather the 1976 version of him, as they show part of the clip I linked to earlier (where Bob welcomes us to the 1,000th episode way-back-when. "That's a lot of shows," he said at the time... little did he know! Flash-forward to 2014, where Drew confirms that, yes, a thousand shows is indeed a lot, but here we are having done eight thousand!

Our representative from Episode #4,000 (no clip to be found, alas) is Dice Game:

To be honest, when I saw they went to the GPT I was half-expecting this to be Pick-a-Number, which actually debuted on the 4,000th show. But I'm not gonna complain about that, surely!

Showcases: Jami top winner, Daniel runner-up.

1. A Certain Number
  • Pair of Nikon S8000 digital cameras (RR)
  • BMW G650 GS motorcycle (MA)
  • Trip to Phuket, Thailand (6n, Twin Palms Phuket; MA)
    • Over 8,000 miles from LA... see what they did there?
    • Daily breakfast
    • 1 dinner
    • 24hr butler service
Jami passes; Daniel bids $25,000.
(My bid: $22,421)

2. Trivia Time!
  • What if you had a nickel for every contestant who's ever Come On Down since we started in 1972? Well, that's almost 70,000 contestants, so that works out to just about...
    • $3,500 cash (MA)
  • We've also done some figuring and estimated that of those 70,000, about 32,000 of them were sent on trips to various exotic (and some not-so-exotic!) locales all over the globe -- such as this, for instance:
    • Trip to Maui, HI (6n, Travaasa Hāna; RR)
      • Daily Pilates & meditation classes
  • The Peanut Gallery has, over the past 41½ years, provided a seat -- and a potential spot in Contestant's Row -- for an estimated 2.4 million people, all of whom love it when the big doors open to reveal one of these babies:
    • 2014 Kia Rio LX (1.6L, AT, rear bumper appliqué; MA)
Jami bids $23,550.

I think the episode was moved to today because of all the reschedulings that happened earlier in the season.

Had all the episodes aired on their intended airdates (as Steve "Scorpz" Guillemette has laid out in his calendar), then this would've been the 8,000th episode. I assume the rescheduling was done so that it would STAY #8,000...

But someone goofed! I have the April Fool's Day special pegged as Episode #7,992. I redid my math and found it to have aired as Episode #7,993...making this one Episode #7,997! The REAL "8,000th" episode won't happen until this Thursday.

But, this was taped as and originally intended to BE the real 8,000th! Confused yet? Me too. X_x
