TPiRecap: 16 May 2014 (Salute to Firefighters)

Sorry about yesterday, folks. Just one of those things that couldn't be helped. (Remember when technology was supposed to make our lives easier?)

Anyway, you didn't miss a whole lot, just a 2-for-6 day that did at least include an Any Number win and a (failed) Bonus Spin, but was otherwise completely unremarkable. Full details are available from the usual alternative sources if you so desire. And with that, let's officially wrap up this week...

Note
Salute to Firefighters

Yep, it's time for another Spectacular, this one saluting those brave souls who put themselves in harms' way to save endangered lives. Seems especially appropriate today, what with everything that's going on in San Diego...

Drew does the usual Door #2 entrance, but with a twist -- he slides down a firepole! Well, whatever works...

Oh dear... I do believe that is a green $ that Conor's being directed to stand on. And you know what that means -- it's time to fail at play Pay the Rent for considerably more than firefighters normally get paid:

(Amber passes to Rachel)
  • Butterball sliced turkey (1lb)
  • Febreze fabric refresher (16.9oz)
  • Reese's Nutrageous candy bar
  • One a Day Teen Advantage for Him vitamins
  • Allegra Intensive Relief anti-itch cream (1oz)
  • Mountain Dew soda (2L)

My Arrangement:
Mailbox: Skin cream
1st Floor: Turkey + Soda
2nd Floor: Refresher + Candy bar
Attic: Vitamins

However, and as usual I'm typing this before Conor actually begins playing, I just know what's gonna happen -- he's gonna put either the candy bar or the soda in the mailbox. They always think -- well, almost always -- that if the most expensive item has to go in the attic, the least expensive one must logically go in the mailbox. It never dawns on them that the cheapo items are virtually always supposed to work in tandem with something else on the table.

In any event, here's what Conor does...

Candy bar (QED)
$1.59

$1,000
$1.59
Go on...
Soda
$1.99
Vitamins
$11.99
$5,000
$13.98
STOP
(for the love of all that's holy)
Refresher
$3.99
Turkey
$4.49
$10,000
$8.48

Skin cream
$5.43

$100,000
$5.43

Solution:
Mailbox: Skin cream = $5.43
1st Floor: Refresher ($3.99) + Candy bar ($1.59) = $5.58
2nd Floor: Turkey ($4.99) + Soda ($1.99) = $6.98
Attic: Vitamins = $11.99

Alternate Solution:
Mailbox: Turkey = $4.99
1st Floor: Refresher ($3.99) + Candy bar ($1.59) = $5.58
2nd Floor: Skin cream ($5.43) + Soda ($1.99) = $7.42
Attic: Vitamins = $11.99

Alternate Solution #2:
Mailbox: Skin cream = $5.43
1st Floor: Refresher ($3.99) + Soda ($1.99) = $5.98
2nd Floor: Turkey ($4.99) + Soda ($1.59) = $6.58
Attic: Vitamins = $11.99

Alternate Solution #3:
Mailbox: Turkey = $4.99
1st Floor: Refresher ($3.99) + Soda ($1.99) = $5.98
2nd Floor: Skin cream ($5.43) + Candy bar ($1.59) = $7.02
Attic: Vitamins = $11.99

At least four potential ways to win this... or really sixteen, since the order of the two items on each of the first and second floors doesn't really matter.  Make that five ways (or twenty); tpirrules1972 found a way to win that actually did involve putting the Nutrageous in the mailbox:

Mailbox: Candy bar = $1.59
1st Floor: Turkey ($4.99) + Soda ($1.99) = $6.98
2nd Floor: Skin cream ($5.43) + Refresher ($3.99) = $9.42
Attic: Vitamins = $11.99

I wonder if it isn't the common stigma about vitamins ("They're not real medicine") that makes people underestimate how expensive they really are. This isn't the first time I've seen something like this happen, and it's headdesk-worthy.

Uh-oh. I don't like the look of either of those bids, as you can probably figure out from my own guesses...

All the firefighters in the Peanut Gallery today take home something a little extra: a trip to Las Vegas, NV (2n, Riviera Hotel & Casino; AL)... and it's not limited to just firefighters, either, the offer extends to lucky home viewers as well

A special message to one reader in particular, one Mr. Michael Taylor, who I know is going to try to post a comment about this: Whatever you send me is going to be deleted before it gets out into the wild, so don't even waste your time trying to rewrite reality to suit your preferences. Despite what you think, you are not the God of Price is Right, you have no power to declare anything "technical wins," and you are NOT going to change the show's format on Monday to nine Pricing Games and three Showcases. Not. Going. To happen. I cannot and will not entertain delusional thoughts.

...Sorry about that, folks. Just had to get that off my chest. Won't happen again.

See you Monday, hopefully with better results...

    1. Apparently not, because he reared his head on the Game Show Paradise board (and in my moderation queue) spewing his usual garbage about declaring this or that a "technical win" because he had a hangnail that morning or some equally ludicrous reason.

I really dislike giving free publicity to obvious trolls like that, but sometimes it just gets to the point where you have to put your foot down...
