It was hard to tell if Drew said "seven-fifteen" or "seven-fifty." I went with the former because that's what it sounded more like to me, but I'm just making the point.  Roadgeek Adam and Qwizx both say $750, so I'm outvoted.  Still, it was hard for me to tell the difference.

Bargain Game:
  1. Kymco Like 50LX motorscooter (GOS)

Not sure which of the three candidates for the front it is, but that 9 for the middle digit would lead me in the direction of this being an Hijo del Cheapo situation, with the back hiding behind that 12. On the other hand, I was just flagrantly wrong myself, so what do I really know?

Let's see which way it shakes out...

Check-Out:
Maid service (12 visits), groceries (52 weeks), & movie tickets (104) for 1 year ($6,852; RR, GOS)

  • Ajax cleanser with bleach (14oz)
  • Nabisco Barnum's Animals crackers (8oz Snak-Sak)
  • Chicken of the Sea sardines (3.75oz)
  • Solo paper plates (48)
  • Olay Quench body lotion (11.8 fl oz)

Drew: "We should change the name of this game to 'The Bachelor's Pantry'..."

Play Along time for me on this rather-more-difficult-than-it-needs-to-be setup:
Cleanser = $3.49
Cookies = $2.89
Sardines = $1.69
Paper plates = $4.69
Lotion = $5.99
Total = $18.75

But that's me. What matters is what Sue thinks. Which looks a little something like this...

And my own result:

Lotion = ▼50¢
Total = ▲$2.80

So yeah, not that much better on my end. It's been too long since I last bought abrasive cleanser or paper plates.

What a strange first half... the car game was (relatively) easy and the games with (again, relatively) cheap prizes were the killers.

Race Game:
  1. Flexsteel leather recliner (RR)
  2. Electrolux eco-friendly washer & dryer (RR)
  3. BCBG leather clutch & ankle boots (GOS)
  4. Apple Mac Pro (27" display, 12GB RAM, 256GB SSD, HP AIO; GOS)

$578
$1699
$2598
$4236

Easy from where I sit... the washer & dryer have to be $2,598, and the accessories are most likely $578. That leaves $1,699 for the recliner and $4,236 on the computer... pricey, but then again it is a Mac Pro (and not a relatively cheap iMac). Of course, those last two could also go the other way; Flexsteel is expensive stuff, after all, and even Apple might have trouble getting a computer up over four grand in this day and age. But with the appliances and accessories being pretty obvious as to which tags should go there, it comes down to having enough time to do both arrangements of the other two.

45 seconds... go!

...I kid you not, she actually thought she had switched the $2,598 and $1,699 around -- but she didn't! Even Drew didn't seem to notice. Well, that's fourteen precious seconds down the drain. Arrrrrrgh...

WIPEOUT

...Folks, I like to think of myself as a fair person. I am willing to chalk things like this up to nerves -- the cameras are on, the audience is in your ear, you know this will eventually be seen by millions of people across North America and beyond. Anyone can have vapor lock under these conditions; I know I would.

With all of that being said and understood up front, this is still one of the absolute worst playings of Race Game I have ever personally witnessed, if not the very worst. It wasn't even just the whole deer-in-the-headlights deal, which you know can set me off like a hypersensitive smoke detector, although that was certainly part of it. It was the fact that she tried to make changes she didn't even realize weren't actually changing anything, but she was too worried about polling the audience to even realize what she was doing... or not doing, as the case may be. This is the worst kind of deer-in-the-headlights attack, the kind where you totally lose track of your surroundings and have literally no idea what's going on.

All future contestants, of any audience-participation show such as this: You can not have this happen to you. It's the surest route to ignominy there is. You can't assume the audience knows any more than you do and rely on them for every decision you make. Yes, I know stage players are often encouraged by the contestant coordinators to involve the audience in their decision-making process, and in cases where you have friends and family out there, often no encouragement is needed... but at the end of the day, they're not the ones playing the game, they're not the ones for whom the prizes are on the line. You are. If you rely on the mob mentality too much, especially when a clock is tick-tick-ticking away, what happened to Kelly could just as easily happen to you or me or anyone else. And that would be bad.

Putting that train wreck firmly in our rearview mirror, let's see if we can't somehow turn our fortunes around now...

Jameelah and Brandon have seats reserved on the next shuttle flight to Leftover Island. But one of them can still earn a change in their iteneraries to a more desirable location -- the stage. Additionally, Brandon has the advantage this time, giving him an edge over Jameelah. What will come of this? Let's find out...

  1. Would you say Kelly was as bad as Thuy-Van, or worse? If you don't know who Thuy-Van was, she played a notorious Race Game from all way back in 2002.

    1. I would say Kelly's playing was actually worse than that, because Thuy-Van actually did manage to make one legitimate change in her tags. Kelly, on the other hand, kept picking up tags and moving them right back to where she had them in the first place. It's the epitome of a wasted chance.

  3. What made the Race Game playing especially egregious was that it came after Drew had specifically TOLD HER not to look at the audience, because it would take too much time.

  5. And the lesson to be learned in regard to Race Game (and Bonkers as well) is when Drew tells you specifically NOT TO LOOK AT THE AUDIENCE, BECAUSE YOU LOSE TIME THAT WAY, pays to listen to that piece of advice. Another Race Game lesson is a simple one: if you get a 0 go back and make SENSIBLE changes. Who knows... you could get 2 or all 4!
