Socially Awkward Awesome! Week #1

All this week, Price is celebrating the (sometimes dubious) joys of social media. For instance, today you'll be seeing live Tweets people are talking about via the hashtag #PriceIsRight. Other goodies will be demonstrated throughout the week.

If there are any particularly interesting Tweets that show up on screen, I'll probably make mention of them, but by and large I expect to pretty much ignore this gimmick. Not that I think it's a bad idea, mind you -- I actually kinda like it -- but it's just kinda beyond the realm of what we normally cover here at the Towers. But, we shall see...

Very interesting indeed! It now comes down to Lady Luck -- and even though there are three Strikes still in the bag, think of it this way: Luis has three shots at drawing that final 3!

Can he pull this off?

S'what I get for trying to outthink myself. See, I'm used to motorcycles ending in -99, so when the tag didn't end in that I automatically assumed it went with the non-motorcycle. I should've realized that nearly $3,500 for a desktop PC in this day and age (non-Apple division) is simply insane.

By the way, the live Tweets are all pretty much what I thought they'd be so far -- generic praise for the show, people saying their favorite game is Cliff Hangers or some-such, people talking about watching with their grandmothers, that sort of thing. It's nice for what it is, but not really... noteworthy, I guess is the word I'm looking for. I'll keep an eye on it, however, and if something interesting does show up, I'll pass it along.

...Time out! After George tells us about our next IUFB, Drew, Rachel, and Amber suddenly break into dance.

...I'm totally not kidding, either. Even George gets into the act from the Gray Area. It's a Price is Right flash mob!

The music is a club-mix version of that "Tweetle-Leetle-Leet" song, or whatever it was, from the '50s, and serves as a bed so they can air some more live Tweets. Well, that was... random, to say the least... of course, with flash mobs, isn't that kind of the point?

I don't know why, because there's never been even the hint of a rumor to this effect, but every time I see this game lately I half-expect to see it revamped with a touchscreen gameboard. I guess I'm just deranged like that...

I just noticed there's an interesting prop set up in the Peanut Gallery -- it's one of the Season 38-41 Showcase podia, or at least the shell of one with its plasma screen removed and replaced with cardboard filler, with what looks like a laptop setup on it. I guess it's there so people can Tweet or whatever from the audience?

Yep, that's exactly what the old Showcase podium's set up for, as Drew explains when we come back from break. In fact, both old podia have been repurposed in this fashion and are present at the head of both aisles. Gotta admit, that's one way to reuse an obsolete prop. ^^;

Showcases: Tara top winner, Frances runner-up. Interestingly, both got on stage via perfect bids.

I said I'd mention Tweets if they were interesting; well, @DParikh91 had one that fit the bill for me. I quote:

"@PriceIsRight Showcase time. If it's a car on the 1st one, bid, if not pass it and get the car in the 2nd one. #PriceIsRight"

This actually stems from a false assumption that there is always a car in the Showcase round. While that's true 95% of the time, there have been several shows, even recently, where no cars have been offered in either Showcase. And even if there is a car in the second Showcase, if you have a good feeling about bidding on the prizes in the first one, you should go for it anyway; that would be the time, if ever there was a time, to actively attempt scoring a DSW.

But in the end, it's your game. You play it the way you want to. ^^;

  3. And THAT, ladies and germs, is why I always refer to Three Strikes in my own TPIRecaps as "Tedious and Numbing™". It's also why Drew called the game that on its first playing in Season 37! I lost all respect for the game after it was played for a Ferrari in April 2013. Can we send this sick puppy off to join Hurdles, Bump, Gallery Game, Make Your Mark, and Rod Roddy now? -_-;

    At least Tara was fun. I especially liked how, during the first Showcase, she smiled like she was some car model in Japan posing for a photo while Francine was like "uh, yeah, whatever". xD

    That "flash mob" dance looked like an idea I've had for TPIR since January 2005.

    For some odd reason, I thought Danielle was wearing a swim cap when I first saw her.

    I correctly guessed $9,359 for the outdoor kitchen island in Squeeze Play! IMHO, it seemed obvious that that 9 needed to go.

    Tina was such a dumbass! What she did is precisely how you DON'T play Money Game. -_-;

    The end of today's episode mentioned Pinterest. Will THAT site be the focus of tomorrow's episode? (I'm under the impression they'll focus on Twitter all week.)
