TPiRecap: 26 September 2014 (Season 43 Premiere Week #5)

Well, if you've been avoiding the spoilers (or at least, the comment sections on this blog), today is a rather momentous occasion in the 42+ year history of The (New) Price is Right. You'll discover why in due course.

For now, let's just jump right into things...

It wouldn't be a Premiere Week if we didn't pull out at least one of the Big Four, and to that end, Robyn will now walk the fabled Golden Road:
  1. Momentum exercise bicycle (MA)
  2. Beachcomber Leep portable hot tub (RR)
  3. 2014 Jaguar F-Type convertible (3L V6, AT, premium pack 1, the works; over $73,000; MA)

No pyro this time? Weird, considering all recent precedent.

Robyn picks the 6, and I groan loudly enough to be heard all the way across time and space to that very studio...

But now, of course, it's the ultimate stab in the dark...

Makes you wonder if the car can have repeating digits, since there's no six-digit price to follow it. That could bring it down to a 50:50 shot between the 8 and the 1 -- and I find myself gravitating towards the 1.

But it's Robyn's game, and not mine, so here's what she does:

We are apparently of the same mindset.

First Enter-key abuse of Season 43...

As always happens, Gary doesn't get to play the game on his shirt (which is at least Hole in One instead of the usual suspect). No, instead it's gonna be Clock Game:
  1. Genesis gas barbecue (RR)
  2. Margaritaville margarita maker w/6 glasses (RR)

Bonus Prize: Patio Republic outdoor furniture ($5,799 [1]; MA)

Yay for being a price I can actually definitively look up. ^^;

Do you notice something a bit strange? The Turntable seems to be backwards. Here, I'll show ya:

Note the background; Clocky's actually in front of the Turntable, where the giant silver $ would normally be seen.

And wouldn't you know, there's actually a reason for this. As Drew waxes nostalgic about Clock Game's long and storied history on Price, it becomes clear that this is, indeed, the moment we've been waiting for, that this is the game that mike teased as getting a new look this Premiere Week -- and that the original Clocky prop, after 42 years of faithful service, is going to receive that rarest of all things for a Pricing Game, an actual on-camera send-off.

Sure enough, Drew requests the staff work their magic with the Turntable, and it's out with the old, and in with the new...

(Apologies for the lo-fi screencaps, but I literally have no other way to do them at the moment.)

Much credit to everyone who commented, Tweeted, e-mailed, or otherwise contacted me or pointed me to BuzzerBlog's article about this impending development; Mandy, Shaun, and others almost too numerous to mention.

The new prop, by the way, looks pretty good too. That's certainly one way to keep the "classic" flavor while still making it look all shiny and 21st-century. (UK game show fans, doesn't it kinda put you in mind of Countdown?)

Anyway, the game hasn't changed at all, just the livery. We still play it exactly the same way we always have, replete with the patio furniture (and $1,000 cash) going to Gary if he gets both prizes.

Something else that hasn't changed: Those little boxes Drew looks into for the prices. They've been repainted silver, but they still appear to be the same props as ever. (According to legend, the person who designed them originally passed away years ago, and no one currently on staff knows how to make new ones, or can figure out a better way of concealing the ARP from the contestant when Drew's that close to him/her on stage.)

Yes, those are backlit graphics on the clock that turn off segment by segment as time ticks away. There's also a nice subtle circuit-board pattern on the prop, not really visible until you get a closeup.

Actually, there's no mention made about the $1,000 cash bonus, but unless and until I hear otherwise I'm going to assume it's still part of the game and score accordingly.

Nicely played, and a great debut for the new-look Clocky!

  1. I had my doubts about your Pick-a-Pair guess. Red Bull and dairy don't mix.

  2. When you gave credit to everyone who contacted you about the new Clock Game,I see a name that is like my name but spelled differently. You didn't give me ANY credit at all did you?

    2. Well, thank you for fixing the error. I wish you could have put in my last name too but I really thank you for giving me some credit. Why don't we talk about Golden Road? I knew that it was going to be lost. It's time to face facts. That game will never ever be won again. It needs to be retired. the same goes for Triple Play. I 100% agree with you about Gas Money and Stack the Deck and That's Too Much though.

  3. It was clock game, wow i was wrong. golden road lost again and not won, why am i not surprised.

they did a great job with the redesign of clock game and its transitioned very well to this day and age. the on camera sendoff for the old prop was well done.

now, what work should be done on golden road to actually break the game's winless streak? the next car that should go on the end of the golden road to make the game winnable, would be the all new Kia K900 for 2015.

unless you have a thought of a nice car that can break the game's winless streak
