#UDecide Week #2

Well, that's different—Drew does the "run-in" entrance from the back, like Bob used to do on days when we'd lead off with Golden Road and/or Plinko (and the crew wasn't as streamlined as they are now). Turns out this was the first of today's #UDecide gimmicks—Twitter followers of @PriceIsRight had the option of choosing whether Drew should make an entrance through the crowd or via the Turntable. I guess we saw which one won the day...

To be fair, she chose the only other arrangement that would have made any sense at all—and as far as the camera and trip go, she wasn't far off the mark. But $30 for a neck pillow should've been a red alert.

Those last two items were the killers. Even I bobbled the skin cream at the end, you'll notice (though I was still close enough on the other four to stay within the winning range). Unfortunately, that's what you get when you have a table full of rarely-seen GPs in a game like this. And now Chrissy has to live with the reputation of being the brain surgeon who lost a Pricing Game that actually isn't nearly as difficult as it's been made out to be. --;

Kelly's bid was originally registered as $399, but she was able to change it to what we see here. This change occurred after the high-C bell went off to indicate a bid has been locked in. So either they can change the bids once they're locked in, or they can't... could we make up our minds?

Even though I was steeled for this result as soon as I saw which game it was, I was hoping for the best anyway. That one's gonna leave a scar.

And on top of the imminent intrusion, Kelly is about to be banished to a very wintry Leftover Island. Is there anything she can do about it? More importantly, is there anything anyone can do about the you-know-what that's fast approaching the studio doors? There's only one way to find out, and that's to press forward...

It's all up to Daniel to keep us from a date with the fumigation crew, and he'll have to Do the Math to do it:
  1. GE 5-burner gas range (GOS)
  2. Samsung 64" plasma HDTV (JO)
The TV has got to be the cheaper of the two, even though it's plasma (and one of the very last plasmas Samsung will ever produce, at that). Smart mony is on subtracting here.

Daniel adds... as I sigh and head for the storage locker containing the industrial-size cans of tomato juice...
Admittedly, when I saw the range was $3,000 I dared to hope I was wrong; $3,800 would be an acceptable price for a 64" plasma TV. But it was not to be. 8^/

Showcases: Allison (true) top winner, Laura runner-up. Mind you, being the true top winner for this episode doesn't really amount to much... but maybe these Showcases can take some of the sting out of it.

But wait! Before we begin, it's time for another #UDecide moment. Price Nation (Twitter division) was asked which they would rather see—$10,000 for a dollar on the wheel, or a $1,000 DSW window (up from the usual $250). Well, we've had both of our Big Wheel spots and nobody's mentioned anything about an inflated dollar bonus, so guess what won this little poll... Yes, for today only, being within $1,000 or less of your Showcase nets you both of them. (This rule will, of course, apply to my own bidding as well, because I consider myself bound my the same rules as a stage player when it comes to these things.)

As an aside, I'm beginning to think maybe it's time to increase the window anyway... with Showcases now routinely clocking in over $25,000 and often cresting $30K or more, it's getting a bit harder to get a DSW through anything more than blind luck, just as happened when the range was increased from "less than $100" in the '90s. $1,000 may be a bit high, however; a $500 DSW range, on the other hand, sounds just about right. Thoughts?

  1. Yeah, $500 is a good amount for a Double Showcase Win nowadays.

  2. I really wished the Twitter voters had voted for the Turntable entrance. That's only been done once before in SHOW HISTORY, and the episode it appeared on also featured a then-extremely rare (possibly the first) playing of Hole in One first. The audience entrance, of course, has happened far more often.

I don't think it's time to increase the double Showcase range just yet. The increase from $100 to $250 in Season 27 came because there were no DSW's in Season 26. Then again, the TPIRStats site says there's only been two DSW's in this season so far, so maybe it IS time...

  3. Considering that "close" underbids tend to be about $1,500-2,500 off these days, I'd say $1,000 would be perfect as the new DSW benchmark. Hell, it was the smallest range used on Bruce's PiR (in Pounds, of course).
Then again, if they decide to increase to $500 (if and when), I'd be cool with that. Still gotta keep up with the times!
