I just wanted to take a moment during this March Madness break to address a rumor that's begun circulating regarding Price. As this involves a potential spoiler, it will be hidden underneath the cut, and after a 30-line SpoilerSpace™ countdown following that. Do not read any further if you do not want to be spoiled...
You were warned...
Rumors are currently flying around the ol' Intarwebz that Bob Barker will be returning to host the Price April Fool's Day episode, for at least one segment.
This is certainly plausible. Bob has, as we all know, maintained a good relationship with the show since his retirement in 2007 and subsequent passing-of-the-torch to Drew Carey. He's even made two guest appearances since, once during a Season 38 Showcase to promote his Priceless Memories book, and more recently to celebrate his 90th birthday in 2012. And there is certainly precedent for a legendary host to return for a brief "cameo emceeing" gig, as witnessed a few years ago when Monty Hall popped up on the current Let's Make a Deal.
The only thing that gives me pause here is that the rumor has some dubious origins. I won't say where it appeared to originate from, but this has been the source for past rumors that have turned out to be duds. On the other hand, there is also a history of getting it right too, and some major sources in fandom have picked up on it and are running with it.
For now, treat this as a "maybe." Don't be surprised if it does happen, but don't be surprised if it doesn't.
As for myself, this is how I would see it going: Don't make any particularly special mention of it. Don't even drop Bob's name until he shows up. Then, for the segment Bob hosts, just have Drew disappear and have Bob doing the honors, as if he'd always been there. Then, when Bob's done and Drew is back, again, just treat it like it's nothing particularly special. Go for the whole "glitch in the Matrix" effect, only bringing Bob back for the end-of-show curtain call. The double-take for the unwary viewers alone would be worth the effort.
...But what I want to know is, when will they ever do the Price-Deal cast swap that everyone seems to be waiting for? (Or is that precisely why they're not doing it, because we're waiting for it?)
